God Makes Ugly People…Because He Has To

“On the April 4 edition of MSNBC’s Imus in the Morning, host Don Imus referred to the Rutgers University women’s basketball team, which is comprised of eight African-American and two white players, as ‘nappy-headed hos’ immediately after the show’s executive producer, Bernard McGuirk, called the team ‘hard-core hos.’ Later, former Imus sports announcer Sid Rosenberg, who was filling in for sportscaster Chris Carlin, said: ‘The more I look at Rutgers, they look exactly like the [National Basketball Association’s] Toronto Raptors.’”

Alrighty.

Let it be known that I am not a big fan of Don Imus. I never have been. But I don’t have anything against the guy. I’m a big radio fan and I listen to a lot things. Don Imus just isn’t for me. But, I have to be honest here. Don Imus did absolutely *nothing wrong*. The calls for his resignation by Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson are ridiculous. In fact, I find it amazing that two men who have made a living out of being black and actively suppressing their own race with defeatist rhetoric have the gall to ask anybody to resign. When Jesse and Al procure employment which doesn’t revolve around black-on-black slavery, I’d love for them to give me a call.

Anybody who thinks as these two do, in the sense that the term “nappy headed ho” is overtly racial, obviously has no common sense and should be ignored completely. But we have to realize who we’re dealing with here. Al and Jesse are the kind of people who are offended by the concept of a “soft white” light bulb.

Contrary to the Reverend Sharpton’s claim that the word ‘nappy’ itself is racist, I offer this counter claim. The word ‘nappy’ is a slang derivative of “bed head”. ‘nap’ is another word for ‘sleep’. Who doesn’t know this? It has *nothing* to do with color. The original music trading service “Napster”, which was written by a couple of *white* college kids, was named so because of their propensity for bed head. *I* have nappy hair most days, and I’m as white as they come, okay?

As far as the word “ho” goes, well, gosh, fellas, where did that word come from? Oh wait, I know! It’s ebonic slang! Well, excuse me. Pardon the white people for picking up on slang that the black culture perpetuates! “Ho” isn’t racist either. It’s short for “whore”, and the last time I checked, whores come in all colors, shapes and sizes. You want to see that word get tossed around? Go get a gaggle of intoxicated white girls and watch that word fly around. It’s powerless. It means absolutely nothing.

In reality, all Mr. Imus said when he uttered the words “nappy headed hos” was that those girls were kinda ugly. It’s his right to say that. He didn’t break any broadcast regulations. In fact, if you look at Imus himself, he’s no prize either. So, if he’s going to call someone ugly, I think that makes him an authority on the subject, don’t you?

If I was Don Imus, I wouldn’t apologize to anybody. In fact, this is the perfect opportunity for him to address how weak we’ve gotten as a culture. In that we can be offended because some man in the talk-box called some girls ugly.
It’s Don Imus’s job to get on the air and speak his mind. Don’t blame him or anybody else if you out there aren’t smart enough to grasp a little things like *context*.

And you know what? I checked out the Rutgers women’s basketball team.

For the most part, Don was right.
