“President Bush, standing in front of a banner that read “Rebuilding Our Republican Majority” and flanked by two giant puzzle pieces, last night pledged to House Republicans that the GOP will retake both congressional chambers and “hold the White House in 2008.”
Well, I gotta tell ya, George. You really didn’t do much to keep us from losing the majority in the first place, did you?
Obviously, I have always been one of your staunchest supporters . I think you are a good man, and I understand how you are trying to shape the world abroad for the better. And, contrary what the media has been telling you over the past few years, you have been doing a fantastic job.
I also believe that you’ve done an admirable job here at home, at least in terms of the economy. I have no qualms with you there. U.S. Job growth has risen so steadily over the years, that whenever the growth slows a little, (Notice I said *slower growth* and not *job loss*) the mainstream media acts like we’re entering into the second coming of the Great Depression.
I’m with you on all this, George. I get it. Keep the money rolling in, and keep bombing bad guys in the Middle East. We’re good on that.
However, I must tell you this:
I have reached the end of my rope with you when it comes to your “new tone” crap. Let me clue you in on something, okay, buddy? We, the conservative “base” didn’t send you to Washington with overwhelming majorities in both houses of Congress to make nice with the other side. We sent you there to ram through a conservative agenda. And in some cases, I’ll give you credit. You’ve done that.
But I have a serious problem with you spending like Paris Hilton, and for the love of God, will you defend yourself once in a while? What in the hell is wrong with you? You never get out in front of anything. You let people make things up about you and your administration, and all you ever seem to say is “Well, some mistakes were made”, or some such garbage.
Mr. President, I don’t know if you’ve figured this out yet, but Washington DC doesn’t like you, and the media *hates your guts*. This doesn’t even account for all the left-wing kooks who would like to see you hanging from the top of the Washington Monument.
All these people do is manufacture scandal after scandal, and you just sit on your hands. Good Lord, would you grow a set? Be presidential! Assert your authority! Make the people who voted for you believe in you again. Stop handing over people on a silver platter. Did you honestly think it was going to stop with Rumsfeld? What were you thinking? Now, they want Attorney General Gonzales, and for what?
…Because you fired a measly eight US attorneys. EIGHT! Sir, you know you can do that, right? You’re the President, and you can fire whomever you please. Not only that, here’s the best part:
You don’t have to explain yourself to *anybody*! (Pssst…hey…it’s one of the perks of the gig, George.)
Don’t you realize that this is nothing more than a media manufactured scandal created for the purpose of distracting you from your greater agenda? Anybody with half a brain knows this “game” intellectually dishonest. Need I remind you that your predecessor, Bill Clinton, fired all 93 US attorneys in *one day* in 1993. This was an unprecedented move, in order to “Facilitate a smooth transition into a new administration” or some such tripe.
…Nobody said a word about that.
You however, have been characterized as an underhanded deceiver. I don’t believe that you are. In fact, I *know* that you aren’t. But, you are continuing to let those around you shape the debate. When you couple that with your inexplicably incessant desire to “get along”, it’s very dangerous. You aren’t leaving yourself much chance at a legacy here, sir. None other than maybe “King George II: The Man Who Rolled Over and Played Dead”.
If you honestly want to reinstate the Republican majority, you need to make “Republican” synonymous with “conservative” again. Step one is to take control of the debate and defend yourself. You have the power to reshape opinion in this country. What happened to the man atop a fire truck with a bullhorn on September 11, 2001? I’ll tell you where he is. He’s sitting back going “Heh, heh, heh, heh…whatever.”
We put our necks out for you, and you’re ticking us conservatives off.
Secondly, get control of earmarks like you promised you would. I know you’re going to veto the next war appropriations bill, and you should because of the ridiculous earmarks and conditions attached to it, but God, man. Why should it even get that far? It happens because nobody respects you, sans a few true believers out here in the blogosphere. You did that to yourself, too, sir.
Thirdly, we know what you’re trying to do on the borders, and that has the majority of us true conservatives sitting here shoving gauze in our eyes in order to stop the bleeding. Without or borders we aren’t even a nation. I’m not so sure about you anymore, but most of us here at home are really into that whole “sovereignty” thing. Yeah. Pretty much.
You have a strong record on national security, so I cannot possibly see how your logic equates when it comes to borders. Sir, the only thing that has ever been more open than the Mexican border was Anna Nicole Smith’s bedroom door…and we all saw how *that* turned out, didn’t we?
You had an opportunity to be the greatest American President of all time. You’ve revitalized our economy, and you’ve freed millions. But sadly, it’s your willingness to buckle and inconsistencies in between domestic and foreign policy that people will remember you for unless you put your foot down.
You’re running out of time sir. You’d better do it soon. Not just for the sake of your legacy, or the Republican party…But for the sake of the conservative movement. While I don’t think it’s been intentional, you and congress have seemed to water it down, and may be in danger of out-and-out destroying it.
Don’t you dare leave us with John McCain. We’ve bled for you, and you owe us more than that.
Please.
