I need somebody to explain something to me. I really do.

Why exactly is it, despite all that has happened since the 2006 midterm, (which in reality isn’t much, nice job, Nancy) “conservatives” still seem to think that we need to move left to win an election? Or at least, “It’s not what we want, but it will do.”

I’m completely baffled. Could we *please* grow a set?

To be more direct, what I’m actually talking about at the moment is the half-baked idea that Joe Lieberman would be the ideal running mate for John McCain this November. For the love of God, has everybody lost their minds? What in the hell is wrong with people?

I realize I’m coming off as rather terse here, but it’s all I can do to keep exploding in a fit of rage.

“Lieberman is acceptable to me.” Patrick Ruffini has said, along with others in the MSM and the blogosphere.
I’m sorry. I know I’m usually much more fluent than this, but all I can say is “Wow”.

Wow.

You know, for a long time I’ve felt it would be cool to be part of the DC crowd. You know, hob-knob with the others in the scene and observe the inner workings of it all. I’m not so sure. If this is the level of intelligence I would be subjected to on a daily basis, I’m sure I would be writing name in feces on a padded wall within weeks. There seems is nothing but pure, unadulterated sophistry coming out of that town.

That being said, calling Lieberman “acceptable” isn’t nearly as vapid as a statement I saw a few weeks ago, which was, “As a conservative who supports Barack Obama…” But damn it, calling Lieberman an acceptable VP choice ranks right up there on the scale of dumbest notions in the universe. I’m tired of people purporting to be conservatives, only to later piss on my leg and tell me it’s raining. Let’s just say I frequently catch myself throwing up in my mouth.

Look, I have no animosity for Senator Lieberman. He seems like a nice fellow. I would shake his hand. I would proudly have my picture taken with him. He seems like a sane Democrat, which is a rarity these days. However, other than the Iraq war, Joe Lieberman is as liberal as they come. The American Conservative Union scored him at a big, fat 8. That’s not a 8 out of 10, either. That’s a 8 out of 100. For those of you who are bad at math, let me assure you, that’s not a good score.

I don’t know if any of you have noticed, but in all honesty, the war really isn’t the issue these days. The issues at hand are the economy and energy. Well, Joe Lieberman has voted against tax cuts *and* natural gas drilling. Gosh, that looks like a problem, doesn’t it, Skippy? Oh, and the all important pro-life issue? Joe Lieberman supports funding for embryonic stem cell research. Granted, it’s not as bad as Obama, who seems to have no problem letting babies die in sink, but it’s still less than acceptable.
All right, enough. Let me see if I can couch the anger a bit and walk you through this, because I swear, I don’t think anybody is thinking this through.

First of all, did anyone see McCain’s performance at the Saddleback Forum? Senator McCain displayed the kind of conservatism we’ve all been pining for, and according to the polls at least, it has paid off in spades. He accrued a lot of good will that night, and picking Lieberman would only squander it. It would be poor campaign strategy at this point. Dare I say political suicide?
I know there is still a great many of you who think the VP choice won’t matter much. While I will agree that there once was a time when that was true, but I honestly don’t think it is anymore. Two reasons:

Firstly, whether, you like him or not, Dick Cheney elevated the office of Vice President. He is an active, ‘face forward’ part of the current administration. People know who he is, for better or for worse. Dick Cheney matters. The office matters now. People expect more of it than they did in the past. It is truly a part of the American consciousness.

Secondly, in regard to McCain’s situation, specifically: John McCain is a breath away from 72 years of age. Ask yourself this question:

Do you see John McCain serving as President until he’s 80? Really? I don’t. Sure, he’s in good shape for his age, all things considered, but we all know what the rigor of the presidency does to people. It ages them tremendously. Keeping that in mind and if the current trend continues, and McCain stays on the conservative track, he *will* be the next President of the United States. You can bank on it. Barack Obama has increasingly shown himself to be in over his head. Barring a meltdown, or some kind of DNC coup in regard to Obama, John McCain will inhabit the Oval Office come 2009.

Now, let’s assume McCain only serves one term, or worse yet, dies in office. That ,“My friends”, is exactly why we need a conservative VP on the bench for this administration. I realize that may sound morbid to a degree, but I’m talking about reality here. No matter how a McCain presidency would conclude, the GOP needs an heir apparent. More so, considering the current shape of the GOP, that heir *must* be a conservative, and must become the face of the party. We as conservative voters must have time to grow familiar with that face. This is paramount if we expect the GOP, and more importantly, conservatism to survive. Joe Lieberman is *not* that heir. Joe Lieberman is a dead end.

Hopefully, this is just a head-fake by the McCain campaign to perplex Democrats. Because, even though they don’t like Lieberman, they see him as a losing proposition for McCain when it comes to the conservative base.

McCain is many things, but he’s not stupid. I can’t see him coming from as far down as he did in the early part of the cycle only to blow it with a nonsensical VP choice. Get a clue.

We don’t have to water ourselves down to win. You’d think we would have learned that after 2006. Some of you out there better learn fast. We’re running out of time, and we simply can’t afford to blow this one.
