They Don’t Want Your Pity

Sometimes I feel sorry for people.

I know I shouldn’t because it doesn’t really help them, but there are times in life that your humanity gets the best of you, and you just can’t avoid it. You know who I feel sorry for right now? The military.

I do. But not for the reasons you might think, the reasons liberalism tries to drive into your head.

I’ve talked about this before, but I think it bears restating.

What must it be like to be impugned at every turn? To be called a “Baby killer”, or to be spit on, which just happened to a disabled vet in Washington DC over the weekend. How would that sit with you? You go over to do something you believe in, and you lose a leg in the process, only to come home and have one of your disrespectful and arrogant countrymen spit on you?

These are not isolated incidents. Things like this have happened more than once over the course of the last few years, and I have no tolerance for it. The spitting itself is just the tip of the iceberg. There have also been reports of returning soldiers being attacked and beaten by gangs of American civilians. A good number of the men in my immediate family have served in the military, as well as some close friends and as far as I’m concerned, it is the most honorable calling a person can devote him or herself to. These young men and women should be lauded, not treated as pariahs.

This being said, all of the tactics I have just mentioned lean more toward the “aggressive” variety. However, we must not forget the passive aggression. The kind of thing along the lines of when your garden variety pacifist liberal say things like: “They’re just kids. They shouldn’t be there. They didn’t want to go, but a lot of them don’t know any better, and they didn’t have a choice in the matter.”

That kind of thing. We’ve all heard it. It’s a very “holier than thou” way of calling someone stupid.

This of course, is part of the larger liberal template. And this template has two basic pillars:

1. There is no joy in life. Every day is a pride-swallowing siege through hell that must be *endured* rather than enjoyed or reveled in. Find the negative in everything and embrace it with all your might, because it is the hate that your discontent breeds in you that will power you through your day.

2. The nation is dead and humanity is lost. America is no more. We are a soup-line in perpetuity, and the “good old days” are gone. You have no choice. You have no opportunity. You either have to know the right people to make something of yourself, or you’ll have to pick up a gun and defend a sand dune, and probably come home in a box. Numbers and facts are irrelevant,
what you *feel* rules the day.

Even if the second assertion were true, (which it is not) what right is it of anyone to attempt to enforce stewardship over a grown man or woman’s life? These young men and women *chose* to do what they do of their own free will. Even if things were in the proverbial toilet, why must we look upon those who choose this lifestyle with disdain? The military is gainful employment, which is provided by the Federal government, and the last time I looked, liberals were all about having the government provide for them. Logic would tell me that having gainful employment is much better than clogging the welfare rolls.

If we make any attempt to be intellectually honest at all, this line of thinking is selfish. Our counterparts on the left want the United States to provide for them, but they have no interest in defending the country or its interests.

The most obvious example of this is the lunatic push for universal health care. “Coddle me, please. I mean, I know you’re an evil, fascist, intruding regime and I hate you and wish you were gone…but please pay for my aspirin.”

How pretentious and disgusting. There are so many facets in which we could approach this. Isn’t it ironic how the same people who pine for government health care are the same people who decry the federal response to Hurricane Katrina? *There* is your federal government in action, regardless of party affiliation or administration, folks. I don’t want them handling my personal wellness. I’ll pass. That being said, we must know where to properly place blame. As I’ve said countless times, the people are the ones to blame in that unfortunate incident. However, this concept will never be truthfully explored, because liberals must shirk all responsibility and blame others for their failings. This is often accompanied with pointing out problems and never offering solutions, using the standard retort of “It’s not *my* job to figure it out.”

It is their way.

As far as “not wanting to be there”, a statement may have a strand of truth to it, but, we have to look at it in the proper context. I can’t imagine anybody actually *wanting* to be holed up in a desolate third-world country for up to and beyond a year at a time. I’m venturing to make a safe bet that all soldiers would rather be with their loved ones. However, at the same time, I know soldiers who love their jobs. They may not necessarily like where they are geographically, but they love what they do.

Drafts don’t work, and it has been proven over the course of time. We do not need a draft, and there will not be one. The best fighting men are the ones who are fighting men at heart, and that’s what we have. Even if there *was* a draft, why should that be looked upon with malcontent? I’ve heard many people lament angrily, “Oh yeah? Well, what if I get drafted? Or what if YOU get drafted?”

Aside from the fact that I cannot be drafted, when did serving one’s country become a “dirty word”? Obviously, no one wants to fight in a war. Wars are bloody and ugly. However, if I somehow was drafted, even to push paper, I’d go. Do I want to leave my home? Of course not. But if my country calls, it is my duty, as it is yours. This country was founded by the common man. Men and women like you and I. I love this country. It has not intruded upon me, or any of you, regardless of what you may think. This is the country of my grandfathers. The men who left their wives and fought for future generations, so that we may enjoy the freedoms we enjoy today. Without them we would be nothing. They struggled so that we all have the most basic of freedoms, which includes our very right of dissent itself. I’ve never been able to grasp why people who engage in dissent as a matter of principle don’t have the foresight or the fortitude to fight for it. Freedom is not free.

I’ve done a lot of thinking about this, and may have been able to pinpoint when America lost its soul and its stomach for victory. I think it happened during the first Gulf War. NBC and the “Scud Stud” Arthur Kent gave us wall-to-wall coverage as we chased Iraq out of Kuwait. While it was interesting viewing to say the least, I think the end result on our culture was devastating.
It turned war into a video game.

When this happened, it completely warped the public perception of what war actually is. It became something of a reality show which was to last no more than eight weeks, and our domestic casualty count was never to exceed 200. This line of thinking also gave birth to another deadly precept:

We need to understand that there is no such thing as a “fair” war. Contrary to misguided belief, there are no rules. The “rules” that exist are only on paper. Objective outweighs everything, and that objective is to find the enemy, kill them and break their things. There is no gender or social standing in enemy. The enemy is to be discovered, located, and destroyed utterly. Period. The same holds true for any side of any war. War is the result of failed diplomacy, not an extension of it. Not every dispute can be resolved by discussion. At its core, this world is a world governed by the aggressive use of force. It has been since the beginning of time, and that will never, ever change as long as there are people inhabiting this rock.

We must be honest with ourselves and realize that conflict precipitates change. Conflict is unfortunate, but it is an integral part of our cultural evolution and survival. The sooner we return to that truth, the sooner we shall find peace. There is a job to be done, and we must finish it. Getting bogged down with the fact that you don’t like it is irrelevant.

More than that, don’t take it out on the soldier, whether it’s passively, or actively.

He’s defending your right to act like an idiot.

Think about that.
